The Kiln Fired Glass Process
ALICE BENVIE GEBHART: Fused /Kiln Fired Glass Artist
As an artist, my goal is to visually communicate using kiln-fired glass. The fluid nature of melting glass adds an energy and organic feeling to the image. It seems as if, after I cut the glass, layer it, then put it in the kiln; the glass has a mind of its own. I open the kiln to a new creation which comes from my mind’s eye AND the psyche of the glass and kiln.
I begin the exploration by sketching and photographing, choosing colors that enhance my idea. I cut and layer the brilliant colored opaque and transparent glass in a collage-type arrangement to simply and unceremoniously depict my plan. The pile of glass pieces is then placed in the kiln for firing and I experience a release and abandonment of control over the outcome. I open the kiln the next day to a new and exciting birth of an art form. The idea from which I start and the direction the glass chooses, leads to an expression, an idea and a narrative.
